1234 Warm Up
Let’s Begin this lesson with the 1234 Warm Up exercise that you learned in lesson 1. It is really important that you use all 4 fingers in order to build dexterity in each of them!
Intro to Chords
We’re going to learn simple chord changes grouped into pairs of two. We will also learn a series of chord pairs and practice changing between each of them. The first two chords will be Em and Asus2 depicted below.
Be sure to practice each chord using the correct fingering. You’ll want to practice going back and forth between the two chords to build your muscle memory. There is a difference between Major and Minor chords, but for now, just think of Major as your happy or bright sounding chord and Minor as your sad or darker sounding chord.
Take some time to practice changing chords at a slow but steady tempo. It’s important for us to understand that there is a difference between tempo/rhythm. For example, in 4/4 time (pronounced “four four”), there are 4 beats to each measure, and the quarter note counts as one beat. Practice playing 4 down strums (quarter notes) for each chord, and switch back and forth at a slow and steady tempo. Although this might seem a little difficult at first, stay encouraged, and keep practicing because you will get better and better!
