Daniel started playing guitar when he was 10 years old after listening to his parents’ Beatles records and falling in love with the music. He started with lessons on acoustic guitar, and soon after got his first electric guitar. It didn’t take him that long to start developing his rock guitar chops, being heavily influenced by the many rock guitar masters that emerged in the 70s and 80s. He played in a rock band in high school, and, at the suggestion of his father, studied classical guitar at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music for 3 years. There he learned technique and sight reading, as well as basic music theory. After high school he attended the Grove School of Music in Los Angeles, where he completely immersed himself in studying guitar, particularly jazz improvisation. He was a top student there and graduated with honors. He then studied music at UCLA, and, upon graduating, began playing in local LA bands for several years. He moved back to San Francisco in 2002, and since then has worked with many original and cover bands, performing all over the Bay Area and building his reputation as a highly capable and in-demand guitarist.
I’ve been playing guitar for 35 years and teaching for 15 years. I’ve taught students of all levels and musical styles, including rock, pop, country, jazz, folk, funk, and classical. I’m a full-time professional guitarist and perform 3-4 times a week with several different bands, doing both covers and originals. My song repertoire is huge, and I keep up with current music by constantly learning new material. I’ve worked long and hard over the years to become proficient in many different styles of music, so I’m a very versatile player and am in demand in the Bay Area. I read music and have an in-depth understanding of music theory, and have a highly developed ear from constantly transcribing songs and guitar solos. I’ve learned many tricks of the trade from gigging all the time, so I know what it takes to be a useful and successful player in any given musical situation.
I find that inspiring my students is very important. I want them to follow their heart and play music that moves them. So the first priority is to find out what specific music they like. Then I can begin teaching them the techniques and musical vocabulary they need to play that music. And if they want to write their own songs, I can help them develop their ears and various musical tools to expand their compositional abilities. My specialties are rock and pop guitar [electric or acoustic], but I also have years of experience with jazz, funk, country, and classical, so I can help my students with any musical genre. The bottom line is that I love playing music, and I’m passionate about helping guitarists reach their musical goals, whether it’s to play professionally or just play for friends and family. I’m an easy-going and patient guy but I will push students to be the best they can be!
