I’ve been playing the guitar seriously since 1993, and teaching private lessons as part of my career since 2004.
I’ve been gigging and recording with various groups, including my own original projects, for over 20 years. Currently I work with a busy GB/cover band, a jazz trio, my own original band Kave Kraft, as well as freelancing as a sub and solo classical guitarist. I have performing experience across a wide variety of genres including, rock, pop, jazz, r&b, folk, country, and classical.
During my teaching career I’ve taught hundreds of students of all ages and from a wide variety of backgrounds; from beginners to experienced players looking to expand their knowledge and skills.
I graduated summa cum laude from the Berklee College of Music as a guitar principal with a degree in Jazz Composition in 2004.
My expertise includes a wide range of approaches to mastering the technical aspect of the guitar. I’ve made extensive study of musical theory, harmony, counterpoint, and composition, and know how to relate that knowledge to the guitar. My performing experience has forced me to play in a wide variety of styles, so I’m able to translate this knowledge across musical genres.
I have extensive experience with beginners, and I’ve honed my methods over the years to guide students through the process of learning the guitar in a way that maximizes efficiency while still building a rock-solid foundation of musical fundamentals.
For more experienced students, I can offer guidance in a wide variety of topics, including sight reading, scales and modes, triads, seventh chords, accompaniment, repertoire expansion, performance techniques, audition preparation, improvisation, songwriting, composition, and much, much more.
I teach in a relaxed atmosphere, in a way that allows students to learn at their own pace. I take the time to learn what the student’s musical preferences and goals are, and custom-tailor each lesson to the individual student, week-to-week.
I believe in cultivating a strong foundation in musical fundamentals and literacy. I make strong recommendations of what the student should be working on each week, but ultimately I let the student decide which topics to emphasize. For example, some people want to focus on their sight-reading skills, while others tend to focus on learning songs by ear. Because there is so much one could work on in music (more than several lifetimes’ worth) I believe that it is important to let the students’ interest guide their musical direction. It has to be fun!
A typical lesson for a beginner or intermediate student will include some warm-ups, followed by the student demonstrating what they practiced over the week. This might include a repertoire piece, a note-reading piece, some exercises, or all three. For the latter half of the lesson, I work with the student to build on what they’ve already learned. Often times, I let the students decide which songs to learn to ensure that they remain engaged and working toward their own personal goals.
