I was a youth pastor for 6 years (students were ages 13-22). Our program was very contemporary, very modern, not what some might think of a youth service. In this role, I spoke every Wednesday to around 80 kids. I loved it and have always had a knack for connecting with young people and inspiring them to develop. I’ve been playing music professionally since I was eighteen. When I was a sophomore in college, my band at the time received a record deal and we moved to Las Vegas where I lived for 5 years. I’ve played almost anywhere you can think of in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and all over Texas. I’ve been in bands with people that many people know, and I’m grateful for the solid relationships I’ve built with musicians who are currently playing professionally and experiencing great success. I’ve been playing guitar, singing, recording, and performing on a weekly basis for the past 11 years. I have a heart for other musicians who want to develop, learn, and get better because thats always been MY attitude. I have two bachelor’s degrees, a rock band, and I’m the music director for my church.
As a kiddo, I always looked up to my uncle who is a world class bluegrass guitarist. Whenever he would play, the atmosphere in the room would shift, so without even knowing it I understood the power of music from a young age. I absolutely love guitar (both acoustic and electric), and I appreciate all styles of playing and musical tastes. For me, my development came from my passion. I never had to have anyone tell me to practice. I’ve always just loved picking up a guitar and playing. Once I started gigging, my development was accelerated and expanded. Playing live and playing around the house can be very different, and exploring both were critical to my development. I know quite a bit about guitars, but what I’m usually most excited about is what sounds good! There’s music theory, which is great and very important, but there’s also music feeling, and sometimes there’s no “rule” for why something works or sounds good. I love to find the balance!
I like to get to know my students and understand what they would like to accomplish. Things like the type of music they like, bands they love, what kind of musician they want to become, all of this is important to me. I like to have a laugh and build solid relationships. I believe that students learn better when they’re inspired, encouraged, and celebrated. Whatever the goals of a student may be, I know we can get there by putting in the work, having a good time while we’re at it, and enjoying the journey! After all, we’re playing music!
